The hot-number myth

A hot number is a backward-looking label for a high count in a selected window. Change the window, era or eligibility adjustment and the leader can change.

The cold and overdue myths

Low counts often reflect eligibility history as well as ordinary sampling variation. A drought is measured backward from an appearance or cutoff; independence means the next drawing does not owe a long-absent number a return.

Use statistics for description

Historical statistics are useful for organizing thousands of results, identifying records and seeing how rule changes shaped the archive. They are poor tools for prophecy.

Method and responsible interpretation

The figures on this page are drawn from the verified historical dataset used to produce The Mega Millions Encyclopedia. Historical frequency, droughts, pairs, streaks and records describe past drawings. They do not predict future random drawings or provide a guaranteed winning method.
